“Million Dollar Bill” won the 1988 Cup Championship and also won the NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Award an unprecedented 16 times in his career.

8. Rusty Wallace
Another driver to win just a single title on my list (1989), Wallace has 55 career wins and more short track wins than any other driver.

7. Terry Labonte
The elder of the Labonte brothers, Terry took home the title in 1984 and 1996 and has nearly 200 career top five finishes in the 80′s and 90′s.

6. Darrell Waltrip
A three time champion, Waltrip has nearly 400 top tens in the Sprint Cup Series and 84 wins. He was also a championship runner-up three times.

5. Cale Yarborough
Yarborough is another three time winner who is one of only two drivers all time to win three consecutive titles. His 4 Daytona wins cements his spot on my list.

4. Jeff Gordon
Gordon looked as if he may be the best of all time at the end of the 90′s, winning four out of seven championships. However, he is looking for his first title since 2001.

3. Dale Earnhardt
This may be a bit low for the Intimidator, who comes in with seven titles, but he did spend his last six years searching for a title and struggled at Daytona, winning only once.

2. Jimmie Johnson
His five straight titles earns him a spot this high, and he appears to have a lot left in the tank.

Richard Petty’s seven titles and performance throughout the 60′s and 70′s to launch the sport to new levels gives him the top spot.
